| The Building at 2, Dondoukov Blvd
The tender for the development of the Largo in the centre of Sofia was put out in 1952-53. The architectural design had to include the buildings of ZUM (The Central Department Store), the Council of Ministers, the National Assembly (the former Communist Party HQ), the Office of the President (the former Ministry of Energy, subsequently, the State Council) and the Sheraton Hotel (former Hotel Balkan).
The
contract was awarded to a team led by Professor Tatarov and
Chief Architect Ivan Danchov. The construction works took
two years, 1954-1956. The building is executed in the Russian
eclectics style, faced with rhyolite quarried in northwestern
Bulgaria and limestone from around Rousse on the Danube.
The building has seven floors. The Administration of the President occupies the ground floor, the first, second and third levels. The others are used by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Justice and other organizations.
A new official entrance was added to the building in 1999 for the guests of the President. It consists of a glazed walled lobby decorated with archaeological monuments and affording a view to the rotunda (the 4th century Church of St. George) in the inner yard.
The newly appointed press hall is situated on the ground floor.
The
second floor features the main reception and meeting rooms
for foreign and Bulgarian delegations and guests. The central
hall is called The Coat of Arms Hall, where foreign ambassadors
present their letters of credence, decoration ceremonies take
place, foreign delegations are received and treaties and agreements
are signed.
The third floor houses the two meeting rooms for the advisory and consultative bodies to the President.
The interior of the building of the President's Administration
is richly decorated with works
of the fine arts, mostly canvasses by Bulgarian artists,
including compositions, portraits and landscapes. The paintings
represent various generations and styles of art. However they
are all permeated by the Bulgarian spirit, history, culture,
traditions, and an admiration of the beauty of the Bulgarian
nature and people.
