The Press Secretariat of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria has been authorized to declare the following:
The President rejects categorically the attempts at reproducing old accusations against Bulgaria in connection with the attempt on the life of His Holiness Pope John Paul the Second of 13 May 1981.
President Parvanov takes this occasion to recall His Holiness’ words said in their téte-à-téte during Pope John Paul’s visit to Bulgaria in May 2002. The Pope said: “The so called Bulgarian connection in the attempt on my life was an insinuation. It was an injustice.” Besides, in a joint statement after the meeting of the Bulgarian Head of State and His Holiness it was noted that: “The Holy Father has declared that he has never believed in the alleged Bulgarian connection, because he has always harboured warm feelings of respect and esteem for the Bulgarian people”.
The Head of State expresses his bewilderment at the timing of these attempts at vilifying the Bulgarian state, coming as they do on the eve of the state visit of the President of the Republic of Italy Mr. Carlo Ciampi to the Republic of Bulgaria.
